The U.S. Department of Agriculture banned absinthe in 1912. The ban was issued in response to the Temperance League's lobbying against absinthe. The league was concerned about the high rate of alcohol-related crime and false claims that absinthe made people hallucinate or "go crazy".
The U.S. Pure Food Board called absinthe "one of the worst enemies of man". The ban laid the groundwork for American Prohibition, which was enacted seven years later.
